testimonial software and ugc testimonials: what the category actually does

Testimonial software is sold against three different problems and it is worth knowing which one you have. Some products collect (the ask, the form, the video link), some keep (the record, the permission, who said what and when), and some display (the widget on the page). UGC testimonials sit slightly outside all three, because the rights question is different when you did not ask for the thing in the first place.

Collecting

The ask, the reminder and the recording link. The part that changes how many testimonials you have, and therefore the only part worth buying first. Everything downstream of it is cheap, and nothing downstream of it matters if the answer is four testimonials from three years ago.

Keeping

One row per testimonial: the words, the customer, the medium, the date, the permission and where it is published. Unglamorous, and the reason a business can still find the quote it needs eighteen months later.

UGC and what makes it different

A post somebody made about you is not a testimonial you were given: you need permission to reuse it, the person may have a material connection you must disclose, and it can be deleted at source. Ask, get the yes in writing, and keep a copy.

Questions people ask about testimonial software

Do I need testimonial software at all?

Not to collect ten. To collect a hundred and find any of them later, something has to hold the record, even if it is a spreadsheet with the right columns.

Can I use a customer's social post on my site?

Ask first and keep the answer. Screenshotting a public post into an advert is where businesses get into trouble.

What about a material connection?

If the person got anything for the post: a discount, free product, an affiliate link: the connection has to be disclosed clearly and conspicuously.
