Video testimonial questions decide what you get back, and most of the bad ones share a fault: they ask the customer to describe your product rather than their own situation. The three that work are about them: before, during, after: and they produce sentences you can actually publish. This page is those questions, the follow-ups, and how many to send. On the worked example each ask costs about twelve minutes of your own time, so getting the questions right is most of the job.

The three that do the work

What was the situation before you called us. What did we actually do. What is different now, and can you put a number on it. Everything else is a variation on those, and the third one is where the publishable line usually lives.

The follow-up that rescues a vague answer

'Can you give me an example?' Ask it once, in writing, before the recording. A customer who says the team was great will, when asked for an example, tell you they got the report on a Friday instead of the following Thursday: and that is the sentence.

How many to send

Three, and never more than five. A list of ten questions reads like homework and is the most common reason a customer who said yes never records anything. Three questions also keeps the recording short enough to publish without an edit, which is the difference between a film that goes up this week and one that waits for somebody to have an afternoon.

Questions people ask about video testimonial questions

Should I send the questions in advance?

Always. The point is a considered answer, not a surprise. Nobody is worse for having thought about it.

What if they only answer one?

Publish that one. A single specific line beats three vague ones.

Do the same questions work for written testimonials?

Yes, and using the same three keeps the written and video versions comparable, which is what makes a montage possible later.
